Integrating Injury & Violence Prevention
STIPDA, ASTHO, and NACCHO have several archived injury prevention webcasts, 2 of which might appeal: Integrating Injury and Violence Prevention with Maternal and Child Health Programs, and Integrating Injury and Violence Prevention with Healthy Again Initiatives. They are free to access–the archive site also includes a variety of supporting articles and other materials for the maternal-child session that are probably worth perusing, particularly for those of you working in the area of abusive head trauma (scroll to mid-page to find them).
Trafficking: New Offerings from the Week that Was
Over the past week there have been several new offerings related to human trafficking:
Phil Borges has an interview on his blog with Rachel Lloyd, founder of GEMS (Girls Educational and Mentoring Services). “Rachel told me that historically law enforcement in our country has punished the victims of the sex industry—the vulnerable and exploited adolescent girls that are coerced and trafficked into the trade. She said that labeling and jailing them as ‘teen prostitutes’ instead of what they are–exploited and trafficked children– while ignoring the 30 to 40 year old men that sell and buy these girls has been a crime in itself.”

Digital Safety: Cyberstalking
I love when readers (especially readers abroad) send me links I never would have run across otherwise: this summer in London, the UK hosted their inaugural digital safety conference, which “brought together thought leaders, policy makers, legal professionals, law enforcement agencies, government representatives, educators, industry leaders and those committed to protecting civil liberties to consider the health, reputation and environment of the digital world”.
Weekly Wrap-Up @ the Sustainability Blog
Sorry for the lack of wrap-up last week–things were fairly hectic and the Sustainability site got a bit neglected. We’re back this week, though, and you’ll find some good stuff there:
- A reminder to check up on the continuing conversation over at the OVC web forum. While I still have yet to hear back from colleagues on a couple questions I put out there for more nuanced feedback, I have been able to get to the majority of posted questions.
- A great piece on leadership and being an energizer for your team
- A webcast of Dr. Rebecca Campbell speaking about the impact of SANE programs on the criminal justice system. There are 4 videos altogether.
Today’s a call day for me, and I’m stuck in my windowless office at the DOVE Program. But that may be okay, because it is a cold and rainy day here in the CLE. Hope it’s a bit more hospitable wherever you are…
Council of Daughters
With all of the news focusing on Roman Polanski, it seems like a good time to post this:
GEMS, the organization featured in the documentary Very Young Girls (previous post here), has a new initiative: The Council of Daughters. It’s a campaign “to strengthen laws that protect victims, encourage Americans to support girls empowerment initiatives at the local level, increase support for recovery services, and bring this urgent issue into schools, offices, dorms, places of worship and other community spaces.”
Statistics and Juries
Today’s post is an incredibly wonky one–many of you will bail right off the bat, and of those of you who decide to check out this video, several of you won’t make it past the 2 minute mark. So what is the fascinating offering I’m posting? It’s actually a session from TED that I find to be really interesting: how statistics fool juries. If you don’t feel like you can commit to the full video, skip ahead to the 14 minute mark, where the reason for my posting the video becomes clear.
DV Service Models
The Family Justice Center Alliance has their 1st online learning course available on their site: an orientation to co-located domestic violence service models (a la the family justice center model). It’s a nicely done, narrated video/slide presentation, and it’s a great tool for anyone looking at providing multiple victim services under one roof.

Teen Dating Violence
Yesterday, I received an email from a reader looking for materials on teen dating violence. There are several sites addressing this issue right now. One is That’s Not Cool, which does a great job speaking directly to teens about stalking, harassment and violence. There’s also Break the Cycle, which has a boatload of free resources that would be great to have on hand as patient handouts (in English and Spanish), including safety planning workbooks for teens and for college students (PDF). They also publish a report on state laws each year–you can see how your state measures up here (OH gets an F) or download the full report (PDF).
Batterers in the Workplace
The Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence has a webinar series as part of their S2 intiative–the next one is at the end of August and I’ll post on it soon. For now, check out the previous one, held at the end of May, on batterers in the workplace. The whole session is available on line, as are the materials from the presenters. You can also find a variety of info on this topic from the Articles section of the website, much of which is full-text.
UPDATE: The August session closed out before I could even get it posted. I will try and get the archived material up as soon as it’s available.
Caring for Pediatric/Adolescent LGBT Patients
The Children’s Hospital of Denver has an archived grand rounds presentation on caring for LGBT patients and their families in pediatric and adolescent medicine that was initially presented last November. It’s a 40 minute video with Powerpoint slides, and I particularly like that it’s focused on peds, since that subset of this specialized patient population is even less well represented in the online continuing education offerings.
Sadly, they don’t provide CEs for video archives, so no love there.
Invisible Injuries of War
The Coming Home Project, a non-profit organization devoted to providing compassionate care, support and stress management tools for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, their families, and their service providers, has a series of videos and podcasts on a host of different issues related to the physical and mental health needs of returning service men and women.
Management of Domestic Violence
Physicians: The Virtual Lecture Hall has the mother of all online DV continuing education courses: Current Management of Domestic Violence–Responding to IPV. For $20 a credit, you can earn up to 16 AMA/PRA Category 1 credits (or up to 16 AAFP prescribed credits). The course is case-based, with video and narration (check out a sample clip here). CMEs valid through April 2010. Although it was initially crafted in 2004, the site reports updates as recently as summer of ’08.
Online Predators
A couple highlights from day 1 of the SANE-SART meeting: John Clune‘s stellar talk on high profile media cases; Tara Henry and Andre Rosay’s research on unconscious victims (PDF) (I only got to stay for half–such good stuff, though); and Dr. Sharon Cooper’s examination of child exploitation.
Prostitution, Pt. 1
Prostituted women and children present with some significant healthcare challenges for clinicians. Sexually transmitted infections and traumatic injuries are just a couple of the issues. At only a few of the conferences I attend does this subject come up; at healthcare-specific conferences, the topic is almost nonexistent. In a cursory search of past abstracts from the American Public Health Association annual meeting for instance, I could only find 3 presentations in the last 10 years specifically focused on prostitution.
