Integrating Injury & Violence Prevention
STIPDA, ASTHO, and NACCHO have several archived injury prevention webcasts, 2 of which might appeal: Integrating Injury and Violence Prevention with Maternal and Child Health Programs, and Integrating Injury and Violence Prevention with Healthy Again Initiatives. They are free to access–the archive site also includes a variety of supporting articles and other materials for the maternal-child session that are probably worth perusing, particularly for those of you working in the area of abusive head trauma (scroll to mid-page to find them).
A Call to Men
Prevention Connection‘s latest newsletter is pretty fantastic. It includes audio recordings from the 4th Annual A Call to Men conference (PDF), held last spring in NYC. If you’re not familiar with the project, A Call to Men “challenges men to reconsider their long held beliefs about women, in an effort to create a more just society. We achieve this by encouraging change in the behaviors of men through a re-education and training process that challenges sexism.”
Preventing Violence
The Prevention Institute has created a new resource on their website: Preventing Violence: Quick Links. It’s a “web-based compilation of practical, solution-oriented resources for communities working to prevent violence before it occurs“. You’ll find some great tools for community-wide planning and engagement. Best of all, if this is an area of interest for you, you can sign up for email alerts, so that you’re informed as additional resources are added to the page.
Digital Safety: Cyberstalking
I love when readers (especially readers abroad) send me links I never would have run across otherwise: this summer in London, the UK hosted their inaugural digital safety conference, which “brought together thought leaders, policy makers, legal professionals, law enforcement agencies, government representatives, educators, industry leaders and those committed to protecting civil liberties to consider the health, reputation and environment of the digital world”.
Engaging Men
An interesting coincidence (if you believe in those sorts of things) happened yesterday. I received an email from a reader asking about resources to engage men in ending violence against women; and I checked my Facebook page last night and saw that EVAW had posted some info about one of Canada’s latest campaigns to engage men in ending violence, It Starts With You. So I’ve taken that as a sign from the Internet gods, and am doing a post today on the topic. It’s in no means comprehensive (in fact, consider it more of a jumping off point)–if you have more to add, please do so in the comments section so readers around the globe can benefit from our collective knowledge. My resources are, for the most part, US and Canadian. I would love (love, love) to hear about campaigns in other countries, as well.
Preventing Sexual Violence in Children
I had a colleague ask me for some resources for training healthcare providers on child sexual abuse, and while this wasn’t a resource specific to her needs, it made me realize I’ve never posted it before. The American Academy of Pediatrics published a web-based sexual violence prevention program last year. There’s quite a bit of information contained in it, so it’s probably worth trolling through the different sections. They break it up into age groups, too, so you can review based on interest (e.g. if you only see adolescents and adults in your practice, there are tabs for younger and older adolescents).
Teen Dating Violence
Yesterday, I received an email from a reader looking for materials on teen dating violence. There are several sites addressing this issue right now. One is That’s Not Cool, which does a great job speaking directly to teens about stalking, harassment and violence. There’s also Break the Cycle, which has a boatload of free resources that would be great to have on hand as patient handouts (in English and Spanish), including safety planning workbooks for teens and for college students (PDF). They also publish a report on state laws each year–you can see how your state measures up here (OH gets an F) or download the full report (PDF).
Articles of Note: August [Mountain] Edition
Time once again for a run down of some of the new and noteworthy articles in the current literature. All of these are from the July/August/September issues. As always, please keep in mind this in no way a comprehensive list; simply items that have caught my attention from a selection of peer-reviewed journals. All links lead to PubMed abstracts; from there you can choose what’s worth a.) paying for; b.) a pilgrimage to your nearest medical library; or c.) downloading via the full-text access you possibly have at your disposal.
Compassion Fatigue Podcast
One of the most commonly searched terms on this site is “compassion fatigue” (or alternately “secondary trauma” or “burnout”). Enough of you have been searching the term lately that I’m compelled to give you a new offering on the subject. This one‘s from PESI, and while it’s not free (cost is $29), it nets nurses 1.5 CEUs in a convenient audio package.
Hate Crime Violence in the Workplace
Peace@Work is offering a webinar (actually a repeat, since it was originally offered June 19th) on “Hate Crime as Workplace Violence & Prevention” June 25th at 4pm EDT. Cost is $20. You can check out a full description of the webinar and other upcoming webinars here. As the name implies, Peace@Work provides training on workplace violence and prevention, so their educational offerings are all in that vein.
Cyberbullying
In April, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (HRSA) held a webcast on cyberbullying. You can download the slides (PDF) from the webcast on their site, but unfortunately there’s no audio accompanying it. Still the slides have some good info and both prevention and intervention are addressed. There’s definitely an educator bent to the talk, but I think healthcare providers, particularly those dealings with kids/teens, will find a lot of the information helpful.
Invisible Injuries of War
The Coming Home Project, a non-profit organization devoted to providing compassionate care, support and stress management tools for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, their families, and their service providers, has a series of videos and podcasts on a host of different issues related to the physical and mental health needs of returning service men and women.
Suicidal Behavior in Adolescents
Medscape has a new CE offering: Suicidal Behavior in Adolescents–Risk Factor Identification, Screening & Prevention. 0.25 CEs are available for both physicians and nurses. Access is free, but registration is required on the site. As with all of their offerings, it’s in a standard article-posttest format; there is also a pretest (2 questions) that must be completed prior to reading the article.
Sexting

The Family Violence Prevention Fund has a relatively new page about sexting on their website, which in part discusses some of the legal questions this activity raises. Sexting is essentially teens (often) sending text messages with sexual contact, and it seems like it’s received a flurry of media attention lately (you can check out major media outlet coverage here, here and here).
Domestic Violence in the Workplace
The Family Justice Center Alliance is hosting a webinar on DV in the Workplace May 14th, 9am Pacific Time. Kim Wells from the Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence will be the featured speaker. The webinar “will identify the impacts of domestic violence in the workplace, discuss the role of a FJC in addressing the issue of domestic violence at the workplace, and examine ideas for partnering with employers toward prevention and intervention.”
Participation is free, but pre-registration is recommended.
