Articles of Note: August [Mountain] Edition
Time once again for a run down of some of the new and noteworthy articles in the current literature. All of these are from the July/August/September issues. As always, please keep in mind this in no way a comprehensive list; simply items that have caught my attention from a selection of peer-reviewed journals. Invisible Injuries of War
The Coming Home Project, a non-profit organization devoted to providing compassionate care, support and stress management tools for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, their families, and their service providers, has a series of videos and podcasts on a host of different issues related to the physical and mental health needs of returning service men and women.
Rural Mental Healthcare Provision
The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education has a series of grand round webinars on mental health issues for rural and frontier healthcare providers. CEUs & CMEs are available 1 year from the time of the original offerings, so all of these have CEs in place through at least November, ‘09 (and 3 of the 4 well into Spring 2010). Access is free of charge; all are approximately 90 minutes long.
Blast Injuries
RN.com has a 1 credit offering on blast injuries available for $5. It’s your standard article-posttest format. Objectives include:
1. Identify factors that affect blast injuries.
2. Describe the types of injuries that can occur from explosions.
3. Define the two major classifications of explosives.
4. Describe basic mechanisms of blast injuries.
5. Identify the types of injuries associated with blast mechanisms.
6. Identify disorders that might be missed during an initial assessment.
7. Identify management options for blast emergencies.
8. Describe plans to care for survivors of blast injuries.
PTSD & Traumatic Brain Injury
The University of Louisville Health Sciences Center has a free online course on PTSD & traumatic brain injury. Presented by Humana Military Healthcare Services, the course is meant to benefit “both civilian trauma patients and affected service members. Improved quality of care will reduce healthcare costs and morbidity related to these conditions. This course is designed for all physicians who provide care for civilian, veteran, and active duty military patients who have witnessed or have been exposed to serious trauma.”
Sexual Violence in the Military
NYSCASA is hosting a webinar May 4th: Sexual Violence in the Military. It’s advertised as being NY state-specific, so if you’re in the area, it might be a good use of time (and I’m assuming if you’re not you could probably still attend). The featured speaker is a Navy SARC; it looks like medical will be one of the things addressed in the session.

Sexual Assault in the Military
Tuesday, the Department of Defense released a new report on sexual assault in the military. Those of us who do this work won’t find the results particularly shocking (no glibness intended in that statement), but they are disturbing, nonetheless. Tuesday night CBS Evening News did a report on the story. You can watch the video here. Wednesday, they followed up with a piece on whether US military policies endanger female soldiers (clip and story here).
PTSD
The US Department of Veterans Affairs, National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, has a free PTSD101 program for healthcare professionals. The courses contained in the program (and there are many), are divided into 6 different categories and include topics such as vicarious traumatization, PTSD and sexual assault, combat stress injuries, and cultural dimensions of PTSD. The list is pretty extensive. Best of all? CEs available for everyone.
Combat Stress and Trauma in Returning War Veterans
PESI is offering a webinar this Friday (2/6/09), Combat Stress and Trauma in Returning War Veterans and Their Families. The “teleseminar” (I’m not clear what this means–I suspect audio, no visual) will be held from 2:30pm-4pm ET and costs $149. CEs are available for nurses (as well as counselors, psychologists and social workers).
