Elder Abuse in Indian Country
OVC is hosting a web forum November 4th from 2-3pm ET: Serving Elder Abuse Victims in Indian Country. You can submit questions in advance and then return to the site on the 4th for some real-time discussion. If you can’t make it, all the answers will be archived and available for review at a later date.
Assault in Nursing
Medscape’s One Question Blog posted a new question the other day: have you, as a nurse, been assaulted and/or threatened by a family member either physically or mentally? If so, please share your experiences. How did you handle the situation immediately? Lock the workplace? How did those in charge in your setting handle your situation?
Weekly Wrap-Up @ the Sustainability Blog
Sorry for the lack of wrap-up last week–things were fairly hectic and the Sustainability site got a bit neglected. We’re back this week, though, and you’ll find some good stuff there:
- A reminder to check up on the continuing conversation over at the OVC web forum. While I still have yet to hear back from colleagues on a couple questions I put out there for more nuanced feedback, I have been able to get to the majority of posted questions.
- A great piece on leadership and being an energizer for your team
- A webcast of Dr. Rebecca Campbell speaking about the impact of SANE programs on the criminal justice system. There are 4 videos altogether.
Today’s a call day for me, and I’m stuck in my windowless office at the DOVE Program. But that may be okay, because it is a cold and rainy day here in the CLE. Hope it’s a bit more hospitable wherever you are…
Weekly Wrap-Up @ the Sustainability Blog
Much of the content on the sustainability site this week was pretty self-centered, I must say. But hopefully it’s useful, so, if you’ll indulge me:
- The slides from the session I did at NSAC on sustainability are posted here under Conference Handouts (click here to go to them directly). They’ll be available for 30 days (after that, by request).
- I’ll be hosting a web forum on sustainability for OVC Sept. 30th from 2-3pm
- A fantastic (and relatively brief) tool for managers of all stripes: a guide to effective communication that has some great recommendations for delivering bad news, holding meetings that don’t waste people’s times, and much more.
I’m off to the wilds of Colorado this weekend and will be working from there most of next week. I’ll try and keep posts pretty regular, assuming my connectivity is reasonable. Have a great weekend!
Responding to Homeless Victims of Sexual Assault
OVC has another free web forum coming up August 26th from 2-3pm ET: Responding to Homeless Victims of Sexual Assault. No registration is required. Jessy Haywood, community educator and trainer at the Center for Women and Families, and Katya Fels Smyth, founder of the Full Frame Initiative and On the Rise, Inc., will be facilitating the discussion. To find out how to participate in this session, you can check out the directions here.
Just a head’s up: I’m facilitating one of these at the end of September on program sustainability. I’ll post more on it when I have the official details.
Sexual Violence Against Individuals With Disabilities
On July 22nd, from 2-3pm ET, OVC will be hosting a web forum on addressing sexual violence against individuals with disabilities. Heather Kamper from Austin, TX will be facilitating the session. Participation is free and no registration is required.

Working with LGBTIQ Survivors of Violence
OVC is hosting a web forum June 24th at 2pm on best practices for assisting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexed, and queer (LGBTIQ) survivors of violence. As with other OVC web forums, questions are submitted in advance and then discussed live during the foum. For information on how to participate click here. You can view previous web forum discussions here.
Children Exposed to Domestic Violence
The International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect is hosting a Virtual Issues Discussion (VID), beginning June 15th through the 22nd. The discussion will specifically be on Approaches to Children Exposed to Domestic Violence. Advanced registration is required. You can see a list of presenters and access supplemental materials here.
DV & Faith-Based Communities
Witness Justice & Trainingforums.org have just announced a new web forum on domestic violence and faith-based communities, specifically the African-American community. The forum is being facilitated by Dr. Aleese Moore-Orbih from the Faith Trust Institute. “This forum will highlight some of the common, complex and culturally specific contributors to violence against African American women. It will address the role of faith as a resource and a roadblock and offer concrete ways in which faith communities can respond to and support abused women and their children in the African American Community.”
New Discussion Forums @ TrainingForums.org
TrainingForums.org, a project of Witness Justice, is introducing 3 new discussion forums rolling out this month:

- Technological Safety for Domestic Violence Survivors, hosted by Anzala Alozie (launching 5/22)
